   The Embassy of India in Tokyo, in collaboration with JETRO and Invest India, organized an event on November 6, 2024, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the “Make in India” initiative. The celebrations brought together government officials, industry representatives, and business professionals to discuss and celebrate India’s strides in manufacturing and its growing economic ties with Japan.

2. H.E. Sibi George, Ambassador of India to Japan in his opening remarks thanked Hon’ble Commerce & Industries Minister Shri Piyush Goyal for sharing the video message on the occasion. In his remarks, Ambassador highlighted the successes of the “Make in India” initiative over the past decade and how it has transformed India into a competitive manufacturing destination. He spoke about the deepening economic relationship between India and Japan, urging continued collaboration in sectors like technology, digital innovation etc.

3. The 10thanniversary celebrations in Japan were inaugurated via video message from India’s Hon’ble Commerce & Industries Minister Shri Piyush Goyal (HCIM). In his address, HCIM conveyed India’s strong commitment to creating a favorable business environment through policy reforms and strategic initiatives which have been instrumental in boosting manufacturing. He mentioned about India’s transition over the past 10 years to become world’s 5th largest economy and highlighted the role of Japanese companies in this regard including in the automotive sector. He emphasized India’s readiness to welcome Japanese investments, particularly in sectors like green hydrogen, EVs, semiconductors, AI and machinery building.

4. Mr. Shin Hosaka, former Vice Minister for International Affairs of Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, reflected on the longstanding partnership between India and Japan and highlighted opportunities for deeper cooperation in various areas. His insights were followed by Ms. Mayumi Murayama, Executive Vice President of JETRO who presented on Japan’s interest in expanding its footprint in India’s rapidly growing markets, emphasizing collaboration in areas such as AI, renewable energy, and smart infrastructure. She emphasized the role of JETRO in facilitating these investments and collaborations.

5. Ms. Nivruti Rai, CEO, Invest India shared her perspective of the investment opportunities in India, and underscored the potential for Japanese enterprises to leverage India’s young talent pool, robust digital infrastructure etc.

6. In the technical session, a series of industry-focused presentations were delivered by prominent representatives from various sectors. These include Mr. Vinnie Mehta, Director General of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India, Mr. Vikram Gandotra, President-elect of the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers Association (IEEMA), Mr. Gaurav Mehndiratta, Partner and Head of Corporate and International Tax at KPMG India, Ms. Madhu Vasanthy, Principal Adviser at CII Centre of Excellence for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Startup (CII-CIES) and Ms. Kalpana Jaswal from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry.
